Stage 1: Written Examination
Paper 1: General English

Paper 2: General Studies
Current events, Indian polity, governance, economic and social development, biodiversity, climate change, general science.
Paper 3: General Economics I
Microeconomics (consumer behavior, production theory), market structures, general equilibrium, welfare economics, monetary economics, trade theories, public finance.
Paper 4: General Economics II
Economic growth theories, sustainable development, human development, international institutions (IMF, World Bank, WTO), development strategies, regional trading blocs.
Paper 5: General Economics III
Public finance, fiscal policy, financial administration, environmental economics, federal finance, Indian budgeting, inequality measures, poverty alleviation.
Paper 6: Indian Economy
Agriculture, industrial and service sectors, planning models, economic reforms, macroeconomic trends, rural and urban development, India’s trade policies, environmental issues.
Stage 2: Viva Voce
Evaluation of general knowledge, understanding of economics, communication skills, and the ability to present ideas concisely.

Exam Pattern:
UPSC Economic Service Exam 2025 consists of two stages:
Stage 1: Written Examination (1000 Marks)
- General English: 100 marks, 3 hours
- General Studies: 100 marks, 3 hours
- General Economics I: 200 marks, 3 hours
- General Economics II: 200 marks, 3 hours
- General Economics III: 200 marks, 3 hours
- Indian Economy: 200 marks, 3 hours
Stage 2: Viva Voce (200 Marks)
This stage evaluates the candidate’s communication skills, knowledge of economics, and overall personality.
The total examination carries 1200 marks (1000 for written and 200 for the viva voce). All papers are descriptive in nature.
